Jamie Salisbury
Genre:
Contemporary Romance
Audrey
Cooper has good memories Brighton Cove, Maine. She just hopes the
quiet, coastal village holds enough of them to silence the echoes of
the living hell she endured as a captive in the Middle East. Her
career as a journalist is over, but maybe—someday—she can
convince her terrified muse to come out of hiding.
As
she renovates the farmhouse she inherited from her grandparents, with
her cat as her sole companion, she learns to live with the
loneliness…until the day a handsome stranger with dark, haunted
eyes helps her change a flat tire.
As
an artist, widower Lincoln Stewart has an eye for detail, and there’s
no missing that unmistakable spark of connection. In Audrey’s
company, two years of grief ease into bittersweet memory, and he
finds himself envisioning a future as colorful as his paintings. A
future with Audrey.
Through
violent thunderstorms and terrifying flashbacks, Audrey and Linc
discover their broken pieces fit perfectly—in and out of the
bedroom. But in the shadows, a very real threat lurks. Someone who’ll
stop at nothing to burn their rediscovered dreams to the ground.

Audrey
Four days before our wedding, the way
had been cleared for the execution of my father, Frank Cooper. All
appeals had been exhausted, and the Supreme Court had denied his
attorney’s last-ditch effort. There was no time to wait. If I
wanted to witness the deed, I had to get myself to the site as soon
as possible.
Lincoln would stay behind and take care
of wedding preparations. We’d discussed his accompanying me. I
reminded him I’d seen much more gruesome executions than a man
having a needle shoved in his arm. The bastard needed worse than to
fall asleep, but it wasn’t up to me. Linc finally agreed, making
sure he saw me off.
The Georgia Diagnostic and
Classification State Prison was located south of Atlanta. A maximum
security prison, it housed the most dangerous criminals in Georgia.
My father had known no other facility, since death row was housed
there as well.
I approached the prison gates in my
rental car. The guard nodded, indicating where I was to park. I would
be escorted to the Death House. There was less than two hours left.
I was informed my father was spending
his remaining hours on this earth in what they called a “Death
Watch” cell. This was where he could meet with his legal team,
religious counsel, and family. He’d been informed I had arrived to
witness his execution. He wanted to see me. I hadn’t spoken to the
man, this stranger, since he’d been taken into custody the night of
the murder. There was nothing to say to such a monster. Not as a
daughter. As a reporter, perhaps.
Frank Cooper was a determined man. Even
with such a short time left, he was defiant. The guard informed me
that after all these years, he still was in denial. He claimed he had
been framed, had been nowhere near the murder scene.
Funny thing, evidence. The pistol used
was found, uncleaned and in his dresser, hours after the incident had
taken place.
As a journalist I knew I could be a
professional about this.
And so I was escorted to the cell where
he was being held and well guarded. The man I saw sitting there
looked nothing like the father I remembered. He’d aged considerably
and been hardened by his time in prison. My breath caught at his
appearance. He looked gaunt and pasty white. His once sable-brown
hair was now snow-white and cut short. The past ten years had taken
their toll. As they should have.
“So, you came after all. Curiosity
couldn’t keep you away, could it, Audrey?”
“No. I merely want to see justice
served.”
“Ah, yes. My daughter the journalist.
Do you see justice here?” he asked, making a dramatic gesture with
his hands.
Refusing to play into his theatrics, I
made my next move. “What has waiting for this moment for the past
ten years been like?”
“What? You’re not going to tell me
what’s going on in your life? Like why you’ve never married? I
heard all about your exploits in the Middle East. Whatever possessed
you to go there, Audrey?”
“I asked you a question. If you’re
not going to answer it, I’ll leave. I’m here as a journalist,
nothing more. Your choice.”
I knew his legal team had been keeping
him advised and up-to-date. No surprise there. I decided to try one
more question. If this failed, I was walking. Regardless of what he
said, I had my story.
“What was it like to kill my mother?”
He stared at me with those dark brown,
piercing eyes. Yes, I’d stirred something in that black heart. Once
again, he danced. “You trying for a Pulitzer, darlin’? Because
there’s plenty of material for one, though you should have gotten
here earlier.”
“I’m not your darling, and since
you still think you can manipulate everyone and everything, I’m
going to leave. I can’t wait to see justice served for my mother.”
I stood from the metal chair that sat a
safe distance from this monster. A guard opened the door, and I
walked away, not looking back, something I knew he hated. “Come
back here! We’re not through!” he bellowed.
I turned, wanting to get in one last
word. “Oh yes, we are. We were through the night you murdered my
mother.”
