She thinks of him as a friend. He’s loved her since high school.
She’s holding on to the past. He’s worked hard to overcome his.
Brooks knew better than to fall in love with Jaclyn. She’s a trust fund kid, and he’s from the wrong side of the tracks. Guys like him never end up with girls like her. His head understood the rules. His heart was another story.

Brooks figured he might as well give
in and let Jaclyn help. She’d always been as stubborn as the day was long.
While she put away the leftovers, he loaded the dishwasher. There wasn’t
anything romantic about what they were doing, but he hadn’t felt so happy and
at peace in a long time. Every moment spent with her was a gift he refused to
take for granted.
“I see some bowls on the floor over
here,” she said. “Do you have a dog?”
He motioned her to join him. “Come look out
the window. Loki can hear us. He’s trying to figure out who’s in here with me.”
She joined him at the sink. When she stood on
tiptoe to peer over the window sill, she pressed her hand lightly on his
shoulder for support. A delightful warmth fanned out inside Brooks, heating his
blood and sending his pulse rate soaring.
“What a beautiful dog! Or should I say
handsome, since he’s a boy? I guess it doesn’t matter. What breed is he? A
German Shepard?”
Brooks forced his brain to cooperate,
something nearly impossible with most of the side of her body flush against
his. “Loki is a Belgian Malinois.”
“Is he a police dog?”
Before he could answer, she slid to
the ground, an action that didn’t help him recover his equilibrium. For someone
trained to handle every contingency, he was failing miserably. “N-no,” he said
in a voice that sounded strained to his ears. “He’s a retired Ranger, like me.
I was his handler.”
“And they let you keep him? That’s
great. It makes sense, too. You two have worked side by side. I’m sure he
wouldn’t want to be with anyone else. Can I meet him?”
In the interests of
self-preservation, Brooks took a step to the side and rammed into the door of
the dishwasher. His situational awareness wasn’t functioning either. Red-faced,
he reached down and closed it. “Sure. Let me go with you. He might be retired,
but he still thinks he’s on duty.”
I'm a Georgia girl at heart if not by birth. I love to read, watch college football, and spend time with my husband. I'm a hopeless romantic so there will always be a happily ever after in my stories. I also like to write about second chances because love doesn't always work out the first time.
My books are sweet romances set in both contemporary and regency settings featuring stories about the journey to love, from that first meeting to the point where two people know their hearts are no longer their own. My characters aren't perfect. They make mistakes and have faults like the rest of us. They learn the sometimes painful truth that the path to love isn't always smooth, but it's a road worth traveling.
