This heartwarming story is about eight-year-old Jimmy Longwood, who has fallen in love with a Golden Retriever puppy. When his parents explain that their condo does not allow pets, Jimmy is heartbroken. While skiing in Aspen the entire family is killed in an avalanche. Jimmy goes to heaven and meets an angel who decides to send Jimmy back to earth as the very Golden Retriever he’d wanted for his own and to learn the one lesson all human beings must learn…unconditional love.

Jimmy no longer felt the rumbling earth, nor heard the deafening sound of the avalanche. He didn’t hear his mother calling for him. He felt no cold. No fear. He felt nothing but he saw the most amazing sight.

He saw himself rising above the snow squall. He didn’t feel the pain of his death, nor did it surprise him. He looked down at the accident with curiosity rather than any emotions. If
anything, he didn’t understand what was happening. Maybe he was supposed to go back into his body after the rescue team found him.

He no more than thought the thought when suddenly; he was
zooming through a long tunnel. It seemed to be made of sparkling
lights, mostly white in color but he saw others as well. There was an
incredible rushing sound, thunderous, similar to the avalanche, but it
neither frightened him nor comforted him. He was simply moving so
fast he didn’t have time to think about his experience. He only tried to
remember it.

Suddenly, he came to an abrupt halt. He was surrounded by a stunningly bright white light.
He was awed by it. He reached out to touch it, but when he did, he realized he didn’t have a hand.  “What?”

Quickly, he looked down at his feet, but they weren’t there either. “What’s going on?”

“Jimmy,” a melodious, but commanding voice said.

A warmth enveloped Jimmy, calming him and reassuring him in a way he’d never felt before. He would have taken a deep breath to pull that feeling inside himself, but he knew he didn’t have a chest. “Where’s my body?”

“On earth,” the voice replied. “Where you’re supposed to be.”

“But I’m not on earth. I’m here...where ever this is.”

“You can call it heaven. Some call it eternity.”

Jimmy was shocked. “I’m in heaven? This is it?” He looked around at nothing but what seemed like clouds.

“It’s the entrance to heaven. Heaven is a lot of things to a lot of people.”

“Really? Sort of like if you had your wish come true?”
“Yes,” the voice replied.

“Then you must be God.”

“Not exactly,” the voice answered lovingly. I’m an Angel.”

Jimmy ruminated on this for a moment. “Okay, Mr. Angel. If this is heaven or if I’m going there, then I want a Golden Retriever puppy. Actually, if this is heaven, then I would like to have Bubblehead. But if I do that does that mean he has to die? Hmm. Maybe I should take
that back. What do you think?” Jimmy leaned forward, still looking around. “Are angels allowed to have opinions? I mean this isn’t one of those trick wishes, is it?”

“Jimmy, you need to allow me to explain things to you. This is all part of why I’m here, Jimmy. You are here so that we can have a talk. You have more to learn on earth. All souls eventually must learn to never be selfish and above everything, they must learn to love completely.”

I was selfish. I know that,” Jimmy said with a pang in his heart. “And now my Mom and Dad are dead.”

“That’s right. Their lesson is over. They loved each other unconditionally. They love you very much. Maybe they didn’t always show it, but they cared for you deeply.”

Even though he didn’t have a body, Jimmy felt tears. He felt incredibly sad. “I could have done more to be a better kid. I wish I’d been more...loving.”

“Wonderful, Jimmy. You’re understanding a great deal.”

Sadness engulfed Jimmy’s soul. “But I did love them… I just…”

“Took them for granted?” Mr. Angel asked.

“Uh, huh.”

“So you see, Jimmy, we must send you back to earth. You must
learn to give love with all your heart. It’s the only reason souls go to
earth.”
